Cat Declawing: Keep it Legal, Keep it Rare

A politically motivated Ban on Cat Declawing is being considered in San Francisco, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills and Los Angeles.  A Declaw Ban was recently voted down by Malibu.  It is the position of Advocates for Fact-based Policy Making that such a Ban is dangerous, ill-advised and irresponsible and it would be the result of misunderstanding the available data and the unintended consequences.  Please equip yourself with the facts.

This page is dedicated to making available the facts as they relate to the medical practice of Cat Declawing:

LA Chief Legislative Analyst Report: LA's Chief Legislative Analyst reports to City Council that Declawing "does not constitute animal cruelty" and the declawed cats being relinquished into LA Shelters "is a rarity", and that LA has no oversight authority over veterinarians and no budget to do so if it did.  Please read this important document.

A Declaw Ban Will Result in More Relinquishments and Deaths:  The Santa Monica City Council is in the process of passing a Declaw Ban based in part on the statement that there is no reason to believe a Ban will result in cat relinquishments and death.  The data contradicts this assumption.

Position Statements on Cat Declawing: Virtually every respected national animal welfare and veterinary organization in the US agree that Declawing is a Last Resort for keeping cats and families together.  A Ban would be the result of animal activists manipulating the data and masking the unintended consequences to influence elected officials to circumvent the existing and appropriate due process for reviewing and evaluating medical procedures established by State Law throught the Veterinary Medical Board.
